Motivation: Where It Comes From, Where It Goes, and How to Keep It Flowing


Let’s talk about that elusive unicorn we all chase: motivation.

One day, you're meal prepping like a Food Network champ and signing up for spin class. Next, you’re eating peanut butter from the jar (no judgment, cause it’s delish) and wondering where it all went wrong.

If you’ve ever felt like motivation just vanishes when you need it most—you’re not broken. You're human. And the good news? Motivation isn’t magic. It’s a process. One you can understand, nurture, and reignite.



So... What Is Motivation, Really?

Motivation is your internal drive—the "why" behind your actions. It's what helps you want to make a change (and actually follow through). It’s fueled by emotion, purpose, values, and sometimes—let’s be honest—coffee.

But here’s the kicker: motivation isn’t constant. It fluctuates. That’s normal.

The trick is to stop expecting it to be your only source of power. Because spoiler: it won’t always be there.



How Does Burnout Happen?

  • Purpose (a “why” that matters, dig deep for this one, think about for a while).

  • Autonomy (you’re in charge, not being controlled, you’re doing it for YOU).

  • Support (accountability and encouragement, this is where yours truly comes in!).

  • Joy (you’re allowed, and encouraged, to enjoy the journey!).

When your plan taps into these, motivation becomes less of a one-time spark—and more of a slow, steady fire. 



What To Do When You Don’t Feel Motivated

This is the gold right here. Motivation doesn’t start with willpower. It often starts with meeting your core needs:

  1. Are you exhausted? → You might need sleep, not a salad.

  2. Are you stressed? → Cortisol doesn’t care about your macros.

  3. Are you isolated? → Connection is fuel. Having appointments with your Dietitian, especially when you are not feeling it is where the magic happens. I promise you’ll feel the fire of motivation burning again!

  4. Are you overdoing it? → Sustainable change feels challenging but manageable.

Instead of pushing harder, try asking: ✨ What do I actually need right now? What have I been missing lately? 

Sometimes the answer isn’t discipline—it’s compassion.



How to Keep the Motivation Flowing

Think of motivation like a faucet: it works best when the plumbing underneath is solid.

Here’s how to keep things flowing:

  • Celebrate consistency over perfection.

  • Check in with your "why" weekly—rewrite it if needed.

  • Set micro-goals you can actually crush.

  • Build habits, not heroic efforts.

  • Expect low-motivation days—and have a plan for them (like a default walk, 10-minute workout, or simple protein-rich meal).



Final Thought: Motivation Is a Cycle, Not a Superpower

You won’t always feel like doing the thing. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do it.

Motivation is built through action, not just feeling inspired. The more you show up—even in small ways—the more momentum you build. That’s where the magic really happens.

So next time motivation dips, don’t panic. Take a breath. Check in with yourself. Remember your “why.” And take one doable step forward.
